SWITCHLITE PRIVACY GLASS
The materials that we supply include the SWITCHLITE® glass, transformers, power transfer boxes and special devices for the transfer of power to moveable partitions. All other components such as frames, electrical installation, connectors, junction boxes, etc. are to be supplied by the customer. SWITCHLITE® is a specialty glass, which can be switched from a translucent state to a transparent state by the movement of an electrical switch. The life has been calculated to last more than 3 millions transitions.
SWITCHLITE® is a laminated glass consisting of two glass panes with a liquid crystal film fused in between. This film and the two panes of glass are assembled by the means of two intermediate interlayer films. Minute liquid crystal droplets are encapsulated in the LC film. Both faces of the film are covered with a transparent electrical conductive coating. An electrode situated on the two opposite sides of the LC film connects both of these coatings. The electrodes are connected to two wires that come out from glass and are then connected to the power source.
1.2 Operation
When SWITCHLITE® is not subjected to any electrical current, the liquid crystals encapsulated in the LC film are randomly positioned and their random position diffuses light in all directions. In this state SWITCHLITE® is non-transparent and displays a whitish translucent color which blocks vision. As soon as the electrical current is applied across the two conductive coatings on the film, the liquid crystal align and reorient them. Now, SWITCHLITE® looks like a clear glass. Switching from non-transparent to the transparent state is virtually instantaneous and can be repeated as often as desired.
